Since living up here in the Catskills, the Pepacton Reservoir has always been a place of mystery for me-especially driving around it at night without cell service. When I read Lucy Sante's Nineteen Reservoirs last Fall, it inspired me to think about the people and towns in this area who were once displaced.

This, combined with a recent purchase of 1920s salesman samples from Calais, France- sold by the granddaughter of the salesperson- set the story- and the dresses in motion.
